 2016 Preview 


       Phillips completed the 2015 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region eight, the Bears earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Phillips's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to South Lamar by a score of 54-42.

       Since 2010, Phillips has gone a combined 33-32. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 1A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Phillips has managed to compile a record of 93-166. Their 36.0% winning percentage ranks 48th in Class 1A and 307th in the AHSAA.

       The Bears are led by head coach Steven Spiller who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 21-13 over the past three seasons at Phillips. Under his direction the Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Spiller.

       Coach Spiller's overall record as a head football coach in twelve season stands at 73-56 (56.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Spiller's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times .

       The Phillips Bears will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2016 season.

       The Bears will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region eight this season.

       The Bears open the 2016 season at home against non-region opponent Meek on Friday, August 19 at James E. Glass Stadium. Last year the Meek Tigers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in fourth place in Class 1A region six. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Decatur Heritage Christian by a score of 29-28.

       Phillips and Meek have met a total of 24 times on the football field. The Bears have a 12-12-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2015 with Meek winning by a score of 28-0.
